Dang, if these people don't have a corner on the local market, I don't know who does. These folks are amazing.
They support TONS of local people from farmers to community organizations. They have this little sign up in their stores that says "home grown" next to local products in case you want to keep your money in the local economy. They provide a huge selection of organic foods and local foods that taste good and are high quality.
They also have a great meat section of anti-biotic free, vegetarian fed, hormone free meats that can be bought at bulk prices very fresh. That means less plastic packaging waste as well as extremely fresh meat.
I started out feeling like this store was an overpriced ploy that appealed to yuppy Portlanders, and now I still think they're expensive, but can totally see why. They treat their employees great, do TONS of community work and provide a wonderful service of connecting communities with their local farmers.
